We have detected three reasons for an error message appearing when trying to learn new words. Please click on the quick links below to check causes and solutions for the reason that sounds closest to your case:
- Grammar levels failing to load on official courses on the website
- Empty columns on user-generated courses
- Inconsistencies with the number of items in user-generated courses
1. Grammar levels failing to load on official courses
If you are learning one of the courses listed here, you are receiving an error message for the following reason:
Grammar levels are displayed on our website, but they can only be accessed and learned by logging in on your iOS or Android mobile apps. Due to the inconsistencies in the number of items, our system will display the following error message:
How to solve this error
You will need to ignore all the Grammar levels in order to complete the course on web (simply click on a Grammar level on web and then select 'Ignore this level').
Alternatively, you can also skip Learn new words and choose a different mode from the ones available. To do this, simply click on the button with three dots (see below).
2. Empty columns on user-generated courses
Sometimes, course creators will accidentally leave blank columns or miss out translations when creating a course. This will cause an error on Learn New words as there is an inconsistency between the number of items to learn and the ones that are shown to be in a learning session.
How to solve this error
If you are the creator of the course in question, please go through your levels and double-check all items have a translation and that there are no blank columns.

If you aren't the course creator, we recommend getting in touch with them via our community forum (if they are active on there) to raise the issue: https://community.memrise.com/. If the course creator isn't active, please feel free to create a new thread about this course in the relevant language category here, as course contributors may be able to help out: https://community.memrise.com/c/community-created-courses/7
3. Inconsistencies with the learnable number of items in user-generated courses
Some courses and levels might display a higher number of items than the ones that can actually be learned, e.g. the level might say that there are 43 items to learn, but the actual number is 39. This usually happens when one or more items are deleted in the course's database, but our system fails to update the new number, causing inconsistencies.
As a result of this, Learn New Words will throw an error if you try and launch this mode as you learn the course or a faulty level.
How to solve this error
Sadly we do not have a complete fix for this yet, but our team are investigating. In the meanwhile, we advise moving on to the following levels and skipping Learn New Words mode (you can skip any session by tapping the button with three dots and selecting a different mode from the ones available).
If you're the course creator, do the following:
- Click on Edit level at the top of the faulty level
- Locate the item(s) that have no definition or translation and either delete them or add a definition/translation
- Save the course and the issue will be fixed
